To have clean clothes on a cycling trip with children you can safely forget. However, a reason to surrender does not exist. How you get your things clean again, you can read on this page.
In the past we searched laundromats in larger settlements for washing . The problem is that there is at least half a day lost by unpacking bags, sorting, washing, tumble drying, folding and packing again. In order not visit laundries too often, you have to take the corresponding number of things. We have taken T-shirts made of cotton, each 15(!) pieces so that only every two weeks we had to wash.
The advantage of laundries is that the clothes are really clean and dry.
We are are washing now in the evening at the place. You need
- good weather, which allows the rapid drying
- a sufficient amount of water
- firewood to heat the water
With hot water, the laundry is much easier to clean, we use our Kelly Kettle to heat the water. It is washed in the Ortlieb foldabel basin. Normally cold water is enough for flushing.
The right detergent
On the topic of detergent each year flare up discussions. Claudia believes that liquid detergend better resolves in water. Heiko has the the opinion that detergent in powder form weighs less and lasts longer.
The discussion ends by Claudia saying she would usually do the laundry and therefore there is liquid detergent. Basta.
By the way: softener is unnecessary for function clothes, because it hinders the transport of water vapor. So, you don't need any any softener for washing outdoors.
We have a few meters cord as a clothesline with us. This is simply fixed between two trees. The laundry we fix with light clothespins. Normally, the washed laundry is fixed on the panniers and dries during the day in the air stream.
In general, the laundry is still wet in the morning before starting out, so you have to think about to get your clothes dry while driving. Especially if you are traveling with children, you have many bad drying clothes made of cotton. Here we dry on our mobile drying rack, a Bob Ibex. On the picture you can also see the Ortec clothespins.

A smart selection of clothes facilitates washing and drying. Although we advocate of fabrics of natural origin (wool, wool/silk, cotton), these are on cycling holidays rather impractical . Although they need to be washed less, at least the woolen clothes. However, it is almost impossible to get them dry again.
We do not want to conceal the fact that opinions are divided on this issue, we know some cyclists who wear clothes from (merino-)wool and do not wash it the whole holiday and swear by it. A related test on our part is still pending.
We try as much as possible to refrain from plastic in our civil life. On our bike tours that will not work in general, because almost all of our equipment is made of plastic: tent, panniers, etc. That stuff is just easy and very practical. The chain of reasoning that we trying to build here, goes in the direction that nearly all of your stuff on a cycling holiday ismade of plastic anyway, so it no longer depends on two, three T-shirts.
