Preparation

The journey to the sleepy resort Bad Bramstedt to nearly 600 meters above sea level runs smoothly. In allerbestem sunshine and felt 30 ° C we make shortly after lunch on the way to the source in the Czech Republic, which we reach after a long slide only by 16 clock, because we have lost our way.

The traces of winter are everywhere. On the way to the Elster spring we walked around it to dozens of fallen trees.

Well, it has been so with the running of: The Garmin Oregon at the time was only the topographical map for Germany (Garmin) installed. When we had crossed the border, the screen was suddenly white. An orientation was no longer possible. * [Update] Now we have the problem solved so that we downloaded the entire velomap card for Europe and copied to an 8GB SD card -. Germany takes about a gigabyte [/ Update] *

Then we joyfully at the exit to hall. However, the way in Czech Republic are so so bad that at rapid locomotion is not thinking. Ardently we wish for our sprung Riese und Müller Delite hanging at home in Fahrradies without fork, waiting at the company Cosmic in Nuremberg on its repair. Instead, we creep down the mountains almost as slow as we climbed it. In fact we did not even create the planned 46 km on the first day, which was our long search for the source Elster and about 250 meters altitude in the way (Rise to the source included). Wild Camping is so fashionable, right on the bike path behind Magpie Adorf. Except for the railway, which whizzes past right next to us, it's actually quite nice here. Heiko cook some pasta fix, and then we also have to crawl into our sleeping bags, it is bitterly cold.

The motorway bridge at Pirk is the largest cut stone arch bridge in Europe.

During the night the water freezes us.

The milestone of the first day we reached after a further 500 meters of altitude at noon of the second day. Beautiful small towns and villages line the route, Oelsnitz with the St. Jacobi Church, the oldest bridge Plauen in Saxony, Greiz with its beautiful castle residence. Only against 20 clock we reach the campsite in Clodra at the end of the second day, there are 830 meters on the odometer at 86 kilometers distance traveled. Heiko is served mediocre and totally broken, with such an effort, he has not counted on the basis of the description in the map. And then the campsite Clodra is still on top of the mountain. Three quarters of an hour takes the drudgery out of the valley there.

The Taubenfurt (pigeons ford) between Neuhammer (new hammer) and Kupferhammer (copper hammer). It is still used today. The bridge is only for pedestrians and cyclists.

On the third day, it is unfortunately very cold day, the thermometer shows only four degrees. Actually stands on the stage over 100 kilometers to Leipzig. However surprised us from 10 clock, a strong headwind from the north, exactly from the front, so that Heiko decides in Bad Kostritz about ending the tour in Zeitz, because Jannis, which does not move to the front wheel on saddle freezes. Heiko itself is cold when driving. Zeitz in the speedometer shows another 50 kilometers by 125 meters in altitude.

Although Heiko had to torment incredible to his son, and the loaded wheel to pull themselves over the mountains, it's an amazing experience, it can also tell by the long time. The scenery is beautiful. Mountains just already have their charm. The Magpie spring water schmecht excellent and the route is lined with really impressive bridges.

River Elster Cycle Route, actually for whom?

Long sections of the road is more like a mountain bike route as a cycle way. Gradients of up to 20% are the rule, not the exception. Even if there is strong grown children who can heave her bike those mountains, we would let them go down driving in any case to the other mountain side. Much too dangerous. From the gut, we would say that the course is suitable only for children aged eight years, and only when they can certainly deal with her bike.

Longer sections run on very busy main roads – no bike path. This is the case in the catchment area of the larger towns of Bad Elster, Adorf, Oelsnitz Greiz. There it takes a lot of confidence in the driving skills of self-propelled children. Has been exemplary leadership, the bike path in Gera.

Due to a Drängelgitters Oelsnitz crossing the Elster train, some "scenic narrow" (eg the hole house north of Plauen) and the generally very poor surface finish of the bike trail is passable unfortunately for families with small children in the trailer until magpie mountain – excellent brakes on the towing bike provided. If one is not on mountains, the magpie bike path until Zeitz is usable.

Unfortunately missing campgrounds along the way. For normally trained cyclists as we meet abound in Denmark, the distances between the tent sites are just too large, and one would have to call the altitude between the tent sites ...
After all, in almost every small town there are some small family-run pension. For ambitious cyclists, without a tent and stove, but with very light luggage and without children of Elster cycle is likely to be a well kept secret. All other drive until Zeitz.
